Impact Assessment

An important part of ecology is determined by abiotic factors: the physical environment and chemical components. The latter are, in particular, affected by many human activities. The resulting changes to the marine environment can have a direct impact on life in the seas and estuaries.

eCOAST investigates the possible consequences of for instance pollution with toxic substances. Effects can occur on the short term, evidenced by sudden mortality of organisms, but also long term effects are important: pollution can have lasting effects on reproductive success or lead to food shortage. eCOAST can, based on available data and models, or based on own ecotoxicological research, set up a risk analysis for different chemical substances.
